Proper Etiquette for Blog Commenting

April 23, 2012 | By Linda Bond

I have written about this in the past and I know that there are probably millions of new bloggers that are looking to get their blogs noticed, so I will post again and will probably make this a tab at the top of my page for future users.

I’ve been in a discussion over at Jeremy Ruggles’ blog and of course I am not going to mention names but it has been an interesting topic with someone who is trying to understand the whole blog commenting thing.

Without proper training on how to comment without spamming or looking like a spammer is going to be tough for anyone just starting out. Most think that you just go out and type a reply and leave your link behind.

Well, that is not the way it works on this blog and many other blogs. Awhile ago I made a commitment to not allow certain types of people to comment. Here is what the list looks like. If you fall into this category, you need to learn the basics of blog commenting.

Comments We Do Not Allow

1. You are not using your real name

2. You are not using your real blog address

3. You do not have a gravatar with your own picture (logos don’t cut it)

4. Your name is xyz@mysite

5. You leave a comment that does not make sense

6. You use a dead site with an entirely different link in your Com Luv

7. Your link is irrelevant to my site – for example – you blog about pets – you should concentrate on pet blogs (this one I sometimes let go – depending on many factors)

8. You leave comments under different names with the same IP Address – obvious spam!

9. Similar to above, you use the same email and/or website, but with different IP addresses – again obviously spam.

10. You leave a one line comment such as great post or something similar.

If you use any of the above, chances are your post will never show up on my blog…I sometimes let things slide, but for the most part, they all get flagged and deleted. Sometimes I hold comments in my spam folder to compare IP addresses – but these are only for suspicious people with 1 or more of the above.

“I am Real – How Come My Post is Not Going Through?”

If this happens to you, just use the contact button at the top of this page and I will check in my spam folder for you. But, you must provide a valid reason as to why I should approve you, if you have not been here in the past (even some people that have been here before go to my spam box). I don’t check my spam box frequently, it is not a priority for me. Most spam is legit ;)

Hi Linda
I use the same rules as you do as there are so many spammers out there, sometimes the odd genuine comment slips through and gets spammed by Akismet but I go through the spam box weekly and unspam them. I understand that new blog commenters do not understand all the rules but you have shared some good tips for them.
Hope you have a great week!

Hi Pauline,

Yeah, this post was started because of a conversation going on between me, Jeremy and someone else. I figured if he is struggling himself there must be others out there that are too.

Good to hear you have the same rules as me :)

Hope you have a great week, yourself.

Hey Linda,

Spot on article but I’m afraid people don’t even read our headlines anymore.

I recently had a comment about “how expensive it could be when they were just getting started”.

My article was about MAKING money, not spending it! lol

I think this is outsourced commenters and it is very rare that I publish these on my blog.

Great article, hope people actually play by the rules when commenting! ;-)

Hey Sergio,

You are right about those outsourced comments, just got another one today. But, I wanted to write on this topic again based on another conversation at someone else’s blog. I feel that people think they just go out and comment without knowing how to properly do it to avoid being flagged as a spammer. So, this post was for those people that aren’t quite sure what they should or shouldn’t be doing. It also gave me an idea – hehehehe :)

Thanks for stopping by,

Hey Linda,

I think you know how I feel about this topic. I created my own commenting rules last year due to the increasing amount of bloggers who only visited my site for the link juice.

CommentLuv Premium is doing some beta testing right now and we now get to block people who are only visiting our blogs for keywords like dofollow or commentluv enabled. I get a lot of people who have found those posts I’ve written about and spammed the heck out of them.

Luckily for me, all my spam shows up in my main folder so I don’t have to go back through my spam folder and pull anyone out.

Hope these rules will help from this point forward.

Yes, I do know how you feel about this subject, Adrienne.

I just had to get it out there again because some people are just stuck and don’t understand. So, I guess I will add this to a tab (not that anyone will read it), but it might help for people who wonder why their messages don’t go through.

Well, that sounds like a really awesome feature with the CommentLuv Premium… I may some day have to invest in it ;-)

Thanks for stopping by and hope you have a nice remainder of the week!

This is a interesting topic, Linda.

It was only recently that I started disallowing the one line comments, they don’t really add ANY value at all.

I don’t use many of the keyword luv or commentluv plugins, that many bloggers are using today. But it seems in need to invest in commentluv Premium ;)

2 Great plugins that I use to tackle spam are Akismet and Conditional captcha.

PS. I’m seeing you very active doing commenting on other people’s blogs, actually that’s how I found you.

Hi there, Devesh!

Welcome to my blog and it’s nice of you to notice how I get involved in others blogs. I feel that it is necessary to not only learn, but to gain some new followers.

This topic has been a hot one for me in the past and you would not believe how many people post just one liners and how many people seem genuine, but when when you put them in your spam box – it’s amazing how many times they use different names – ha!

You should use at least ComentLuv – that is obviously how you found me. I don’t use the premium one but you do have many great options with the free one, but it sounds like the premium is moving forward in a good way :)

As far as spam blockers – I use a few – Askimet, Gasp and Comment Spam Trap (which I think most bloggers use) and then for my contact me I use Contact Form With Captcha. But it still doesn’t stop the spam completely, but it all helps :)

I appreciate your comment and I’ll be over to visit you very soon.

Hope you have a wonderful week!

Hey Linda,

I love the way how you get involved in the comments. When I think about effective blog commenting, I only get 3 names in my mind and that is – Sergio, Adrienne and you. You guys are really good at leaving thoughtful comments.

Ahh you finally convinced me to have at least CommentLuv plugin. Anyways, I just installed it.

I rarely get any spam comments through Contact form and am using Contact Form 7.

Keep up the good work, Linda and have a great Monday.

Hey Dev,

Well, that is so kind of you to put me in the group with Sergio and Adrienne. Two wonderful people for sure!

We both actually had a little training and I think that is what has helped us to become better commentators. So many people do not know the proper way to comment but with my advice in this post, hopefully they can realize that one liners do not count and look like spam. The commentator needs to add a bit of value, if possible to the posts to be respected, in my opinion ;) .

That’s great that you installed CommentLuv. I have always recommended this to everyone as it helps us who comment get noticed as well.

Hope your Monday has been a good one!

Hey Linda,

Recently, I did change my commenting rules to not accept one-liner or two-liner comments that are not of value (Although, I do accept some of these comments based on my relationship with the commentator). Sometimes, even a one line or two line comments can add lot of value.

Some commentators know about these rules, but yet they ignore them. Some others don’t know about commenting or commenting rules (newbie bloggers).

Anyways, appreciate your post,

I do agree, Jeevan that some one or two-liners are valuable, but you know what I mean when they say something that has absolutely nothing to do with your blog or they say the exact same thing on every post – those don’t stick ;-)

You are right, there are a lot of newbies out there and without knowing what they should do they sometimes can end up on a spam list, but I usually check to make sure they are linking to a blog that allows comments than I usually let them go :)

Thanks for your comment.

Agree, Linda. I have came upon some which were written very “beautifully” – it is as though they really appreciate the content we wrote – but when it comes down to value, they didn’t add anything (they didn’t even talk about the actual content).

Oh, that’s a great way to judge :)

No problem, Linda.

I know what you are talking about. This certain person comes here and posts almost the same thing every time – obviously a robot or they just want their link on my page, but I have since caught on and flag them.
