How to Change Your Blog Favicon

January 24, 2011 | By Linda Bond

Have you ever been to a blog and their icon for the blog was like an RSS feed icon? That is the way mine was and I had no idea how to change it.

My friend Tristan over at Blogging Bookshelf told me how to do it :)

What you need to do is create a favicon. This will represent your blog and make it easier for people who bookmark it to find you. It will actually stick out amongst their other bookmarks.

You can create a favicon at if you are creative enough. I tried this and couldn’t get what I wanted to come out, so within this site is a tag cloud that shows the most popular tags people have used. I clicked a few of them and saw one that I liked. Downloaded it to my computer and then uploaded it into my blog directory on my hosting site. I then went and installed a new plug in here at wordpress called Shockingly Simple Favicon. You can read all about it here

Once the plugin is installed, go to settings and change your settings based on where you have uploaded your new icon and bam – it’s done :)

Another alternative that I found to the Favicon website is a handy download tool called IcoFX. It reminded me of Corel’s Paint Shop Pro, which I actually use for all my graphics. That actually is easier to use, as you can add existing images and play around with them, which you can also do at Favicon, but this to me seemed like it would be easier.

The choice is really yours as to what you use, they are both free which is really great :)

The dollar sign I have now (do you see it at the top of the screen?) is something someone else made, but I wanted something to take the place of the default RSS Icon that was originally on my blog.

Hope this post helps some of you out there that had no idea how to change their icon.

Please feel free to comment and let me know how you made out changing your Favicon or if you have troubles maybe I can help.

Thanks again Tristan for pointing this out to me, I greatly appreciate it :)

I’m so glad the info helped, Linda :D Thanks for the mention! I added a link to my Mentions page and in my Mentions sidebar widget.

(Oh, and the Blogging Bookshelf link doesn’t work for some reason…)
