How to Block Your IP from Google Analytics

April 19, 2012 | By Linda Bond

Have you ever wondered how to block yourself from your Google analytics accounts? I have always wondered this and finally looked into it after seeing someone had a question on Facebook about it.

Let me tell you, I checked my stats after making this short video and it is amazing to see your actual stats and not seeing yourself in them :) If you are like me and are always refreshing your pages to see your changes, this is going to come in real handy for you.

So, here is my short video :

Click here to check your IP number.

Hope this will help some of you out that didn’t know about this little trick and be sure to share this post on your favorite social media sites.

And as always I love to hear your comments :)

Enjoy your day!
Linda

Hi Linda,

Thanks so much for this valuable information. Goes to show things may seem hard at first but just like everything else, once you know how it’s done it’s not so bad.

Hi Terry,

I am so happy I was able to help you. I knew there had to be a simple solution and I also saw that cookie script but knew there had to be something easier :)

Thanks for your kind comment.

Have a GREAT day!

Hi Linda,

Love the new header :) Is that going to be your new logo as well?

I also saw the question on Facebook, fair play to you for finding the solution :)

I know this is going to help a lot of people (due to the question on Facebook not being answered lol).

Great video again Linda :)

Thanks for sharing,
Barry

Hi Barry,

I finally got that header in yesterday and yes, I plan on using it as my logo.

I too was curious about how to block yourself from Google analytics so I thought there has to be an easy solution. I figured other people will want to know as well. So easy!!

Thanks for stopping by Barry and hope you have a nice weekend!

Thanks Linda — I’m one of those who checks my page constantly so I’m sure much of my traffic stats includes my visits. Finally, I’ll be able to remove my inflation from the equation. Great video.

Hi Leo,

Sorry for all the trouble in getting your comment to go through.

I think many of us constantly are at our own sites checking on things, so this is really going to cut back on those counts and allow you to see the real activity that is going on :)

Love the logo Linda, very crisp and clean. Are you happy with it?

That’s a cool tip. I didn’t even think after all this time that Google includes my IP as well when I’m on my blog. Dah!! Dang, I need to fix that right away.

Thanks for sharing this cool tip. That was very easy to do and I love easy.

Hi Adrienne,

Yeah, I like the logo. Glad you like it too :)

If you’ve ever looked in your Google Analytics, you see when you preview your page or whatever – maybe you don’t do that, but it showed up in the stats as a page that was visited, now it no longer does with this simple trick :)

I am happy I was able to finally teach ya something you didn’t already know…hehehe!

Hope you are doing well, Adrienne!

Hi Linda!
Thank you for this video. I have already tried to block my IP address from Google Analytics by putting filters. I guess that becomes more complicated when we use DHCP where we don’t have always the same IP address. Do you know how we can exclude our traffic in case we use the DHCP ?
Do you know if blocking just our IP address as you showed as here is OK when we use the DHCP?
Thank you for your video!

Hi Lenia,

I think you can ask your server for a static IP address, but I believe it costs extra. I am not an expert in this area, but pretty sure you can obtain one for yourself by this method.

The other alternative is to use a Java script that blocks the cookie on your computer. It seemed like a waste to me, but it might benefit you more. I found this, http://groups.google.com/a/googleproductforums.com/forum/#!topic/analytics/NTHhcXNvE3A – scroll down the page a little bit and it explains how to do this. Hope it works for you :)

Hey Linda,

I had already done this, but thanks again for the tutorial (I had to make sure I changed my IP address, because I had switched Internet providers few months back. I think the old version of Google analytics did have the option of blocking our own traffic (without us needing to enter the IP address), didn’t they? If not, they should include one in this version.

Thanks for the video tutorial :)

Hey Jeevan,

I am not sure about the previous version of Google Analytics – it should be automatically embedded into their program without having to figure out how to do it yourself.

Glad you liked the video and thanks for stopping by.

Have a GREAT week!

Hi Emma,

Is your IP a static IP? Is it always the same or does it change? If you live in an apartment complex or use public computers, then you have a shared IP. If it is shared, you won’t be able to block it this way.

I did a little research and found vidoes that Google made themselves and found something that may help you here – http://www.google.com/analytics/iq.html. Once on that page go to “Fundamentals” and then “Filters in Google Analytics”.

Hope this helps a bit.

Linda
